Coronavirus – what you need to know

We all need to work together to help stop the spread of Coronavirus. To protect those most at risk and to slow the rate of community transmission – non-essential organised gatherings should be kept to fewer than 500 people.

People who have returned from anywhere overseas are required to self-isolate for 14 days. During this time, you should monitor your health closely. If you develop symptoms including a fever and cough, you should seek medical attention, remembering to call ahead.

People who have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus should also monitor their health and seek medical advice.

From 18 March 2020, all Australians are advised not to travel overseas. Go to www.smartraveller.gov.au for further information

For Department of Health information on Coronavirus (Covid-19) published 17 March 2020, click the Read more link below to find out who is most at risk, what to do if you develop symptoms, if you should wear a mask – who needs to be isolated and what home isolation means. There is also advice on how to prevent the spread of the virus.

Please note: If you feel you may have been in contact with the virus and you develop symptoms you must first call either our practice or contact the Moruya or Batemans Bay District Hospitals for professional advice on what you should do to minimise risks to yourself and others.

New COVID-19 clinics have been established in our region by our Southern NSW Local Health District – see the news post on our Home Page.

Queen Street Medical Centre Tuross to
close Friday, 30 August

Commenting on the closure of  Queen Street Medical Centre Tuross, GP Partner Dr Neil Starmer says “Closing the Tuross Practice is confronting and disappointing decision to have to make. As a partnership we thought we could weather the storm comprising static government rebates, poor GP workforce distribution and rising costs.  We have exhausted every avenue available to keep the practice open. This decision should have been made 12 months ago from a business perspective. The only consolation I can offer is that your medical care can continue with the same doctors in Moruya. We can provide the continuity of care, just not at Tuross.” Queen Street Medical Centre Tuross patients please note, from 2 September:  All existing appointments will remain as booked with your usual doctor who will be consulting at Queen Street Medical Centre, 49 Queen Street Moruya. If you are unable to attend your appointment in Moruya, please phone as soon as possible to cancel or change this appointment. New appointments can be made with your usual doctor who will be consulting at Queen Street Medical Centre Moruya.

What is Q Fever and are you at risk?

Q fever is an illness caused by a bacterium called Coxiella burnetti which can be caught by humans via direct or indirect contact with infected domestic and native animals or animal products. Cattle, sheep and goats are the main sources of infection. The illness in humans is usually mild, but may sometimes be severe with long lasting consequences. Our Eurobodalla region was declared a high risk area – mainly due to extreme dry conditions throughout the region. If your work puts you in contact with high-risk animals or animal products you have a high risk of  Q fever infection. The vaccine is strongly recommended for people aged 15 years and over who work in high-risk occupations.

Our registered practice nurse Vivienne shares her expertise and good advice on how to take good care of this remarkable piece of engineering.

A sense of community is integral to high quality care

ANU medical student Jessica Weber believes “one of the things I like most about training in a smaller town is that you see a far greater continuity of care for patients than in the larger cities. The thing I’ve noticed during my time at the Queen Street Medical Centre is that the doctors are all very involved not only within their medical practice, but within the broader community as well.”

What I do for thirty seven dollars and five cents

Thirty-seven dollars and five cents is the value this government places on up to twenty minutes of my time writes Sydney GP Dr Elizabeth Oliver. This figure, the amount a practice receives from Medicare for a standard consultation, has not changed in four years, and under the current arrangement, will not change for another three. I myself receive sixty five percent of that. But are the pennies well spent? Let’s see.
