Lifting weights once a week linked to reduced risk of premature death – new study

It is well known that aerobic exercise, such as running and cycling, can help you live longer, but less has been known about the effect of lifting weights on longevity. Now, results from a new study suggest that adding weightlifting to your exercise regime, even in later life, is a sensible thing to do if you want to avoid an early death.
The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, aimed to find out if lifting weights was linked to a lower risk of death from any cause, either on its own or alongside moderate to vigorous exercise.

Better Health Diabetes Group is a “kick start” for patients

Many patients with Type 2 Diabetes attending this weekly exercise/diet group are reporting the group has given them the kick start they needed to feel more motivated to improve their health. Our QSMC Dietitian Carole Richards leads the group – launched in October 2018, in conjunction with Jessie Williams from Eurobodalla Health & Fitness. You can join this group at any time – it runs on Fridays at the QSMC Moruya meeting room, starting at 2 pm and is Medicare funded.

Smoking Ceremony and Cultural Burn at our new Hospital site, a first in NSW

On Thursday, September 8 2022, a traditional smoking ceremony and cultural burn, along with ceremonial dances took place at the site of the new $260 million Eurobodalla Regional Hospital in Moruya. It was a historic moment, as it was the first time that a ceremony of this nature has taken place on a NSW hospital project site.

COVID Vaccination Clinics – Update 2

Finally, our first COVID vaccine supplies arrived on Wednesday the 14 April. 50 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were delivered to the Moruya surgery, and 50 to Broulee. We have a COVID vaccination clinic today, Monday 19 April in Broulee and Tuesday 20 April in Moruya. This will exhaust our current allocation and we are not sure when the next delivery will come. Please continue to look online for COVID vaccine clinic availability. Please don’t despair. The government planning of the vaccine rollout has been a bit of a shambles and recent reports of side effects have further complicated matters. We are digesting all the latest vaccine supply and clinical information as it comes to hand and when we do have adequate stocks of the vaccine our GPs will be able to answer your questions before your vaccination. That is our job. At the moment there is no urgency, we are very fortunate. In the meantime, we are well underway with our flu vaccination effort, so if you have not had flu vaccine yet please make an appointment. The flu vaccine needs to be given at least two weeks away from a COVID vaccine. Please keep looking at our website for updates. As we receive our Department of Health vaccines, we are running regular Flu Vaccine Clinics to both manage the demand and minimise the risk of COVID-19 infection via social distancing at the clinic.

There must be at least 14 days between the Influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Meet our new GPs – Dr Neil Mackay and Dr Borna Das

A warm welcome to our new GP registrars – Dr Neil Mackay and Dr Borna Das, who joined our Moruya GP team on Monday, 1st February.

After four years of training in orthopaedics in far north Queensland, Dr Mackay completed his first 12 months of the 18-month GP registrar training programme in Pambula last year and joined us to complete his final training semester – Neil and his young family have decided to settle here in our local area.

Dr Das has now embarked on her first six-month GP training semester after recently working as a Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.
