Why flu vaccination matters each year

As we head into another flu season in the Eurobodalla, it’s a good time to think about how best to protect ourselves, our families and our community. Influenza is a respiratory illness that can lead to serious complications, hospitalisation and even death, particularly for people at higher risk of severe disease. The safest and most effective way to reduce this risk is through annual influenza vaccination.

Who is eligible for free flu vaccines?

Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over, and is provided free under the National Immunisation Program for those at highest risk of influenza and its complications. In Australia we now have both injectable (non-live) and intranasal (live attenuated) flu vaccines, which are equally effective and safe when used in the right age groups and in people with suitable health conditions. From 2026, an intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) will also be available here, adding a needle-free option that has already been used safely and effectively in millions of children in the UK, USA and Canada.

Because influenza is seasonal and the virus changes over time, the flu vaccine is updated each year to match the most likely circulating strains. This is why a yearly vaccination is recommended to maintain good protection. The flu vaccine can also be given on the same day as most other vaccines, making it easier to keep up to date with all your recommended immunisations while protecting yourself and those around you this flu season.

In addition to standard flu vaccines, we are also pleased to offer FluMist®, a nasal spray option for eligible children that provides protection without the need for an injection.

FluMist® – nasal spray flu vaccine now available
In addition to the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and state-funded injectable influenza vaccines, in 2026 the NSW Government is funding FluMist®, a nasal spray influenza vaccine for children aged 2 - 17 years. FluMist® offers a needle-free alternative for families who prefer not to have an injection.
Key points about FluMist®

  • It has been used extensively overseas for more than a decade.
  • Studies show strong acceptability for children and comparable effectiveness to the injectable influenza vaccine.
