Why flu vaccination matters each year
Who is eligible for free flu vaccines?
Because influenza is seasonal and the virus changes over time, the flu vaccine is updated each year to match the most likely circulating strains. This is why a yearly vaccination is recommended to maintain good protection. The flu vaccine can also be given on the same day as most other vaccines, making it easier to keep up to date with all your recommended immunisations while protecting yourself and those around you this flu season.
In addition to standard flu vaccines, we are also pleased to offer FluMist®, a nasal spray option for eligible children that provides protection without the need for an injection.
New: FluMist nasal spray flu vaccine for children
In addition to the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and state-funded injectable influenza vaccines, in 2026 the NSW Government is funding FluMist®, a nasal spray influenza vaccine for children aged 2 - 17 years. FluMist® offers a needle-free alternative for families who prefer not to have an injection.
- FluMist® is given as a quick spray into the nose, rather than an injection.
- It has been used extensively overseas for more than a decade.
- Studies show strong acceptability for children and comparable effectiveness to the injectable influenza vaccine.
- FluMist® is registered for use in people aged 2 to 17 years.
